Frequently asked questions

What are the different types of shrubs?

The term shrub covers a fairly broad spectrum of plant life. Shrubs can be deciduous, meaning that they lose their leaves in the winter, or evergreen, meaning that they retain their leaves all year round.

Shrubs look great in all kinds of Australian yards, but have other practical benefits outside of their aesthetics:

  1. Flowering shrubs display vibrant flashes of colour during the flowering season.
  2. Drought-tolerant shrubs are usually native, and are accustomed to Australian conditions.
  3. Full sun shrubs require at least 6 hours of sun per day.
  4. Shade shrubs can still thrive in minimal sunlight.
  5. Hedges can provide shade and privacy to your home.

The right shrub for your yard will depend on your personal preference first and foremost. To learn more about the shrubs we have in stock, or for general advice on what will work best in your garden, visit All Green. Our onsite horticulturalists will be happy to help you choose the right shrub for your setting.

What are some popular native shrubs?

Australia is home to beautiful native shrubbery. Australian shrubs can be found from Far North Queensland, right down to the southern Victorian coast, and everywhere in between. They come in a range of sizes and vibrant colours, so you'll be able to find one that suits your taste and the rest of the plants in your yard.

Here are some of our most popular native shrubs:

  • Grevillea are low, informal growing shrubs.
  • Castillemon are bottlebrushes with brilliant colours.
  • Hibiscus displays beautiful, iconic Australian flowers.
  • Wattles have a huge variety of flowering and green shrubs.
  • Hydrangeas are popular, colourful shrubs.

If you’re looking to buy scrubs that will survive and thrive in Melbourne’s climate then come to All Green. A visit to our nurseries will help you decide on the perfect shrubs for your home and our trained onsite horticulturalists can help you with any gardening queries you might have.

How do I care for my shrubs?

After your shrubs are planted, they will become some of the hardiest and low maintenance plants in your garden. However, there are a few steps to take that will help ensure steady and healthy growth.

  1. Choose shrubs that will flourish in the area you plant them. Test the soil and sunlight of the area first.
  2. When planting your shrubs, ensure that they aren't crowded and have plenty of room to grow.
  3. Lightly prune your shrubs from time to time to help them retain their shape.
  4. Water your shrubs in accordance with their required watering method.
  5. Newly planted shrubs should not be fed with fertiliser, however we do recommend using Searles Seamax Conditioner.

If you believe an existing shrub needs fertiliser, start by cultivating the soil around the plant, adding a layer of mulch and soil, and trimming away any poor branches.
