Sensational Seasonals Plant Selection

Seasonal plants are a plant variety that can only live in particular conditions, are a great way to add drama and attract fauna to your garden. The plants will die, release spores or go dormant during certain seasons of the year where they are not suitable for growth. They will only be able to survive when the conditions are right again.

Our nursery offers a wide selection of seasonal plant types, including natives and exotics, fruit trees, roses, and shrubs. All our plants are carefully selected and bred to thrive in Victoria's unique weather conditions, and many saplings will be ready to produce flowers in just 12 months.

Aisles of Annual Plants & Flowers

Annual plants and flowers are an excellent way to add interest and excitement to your garden without the need for ongoing maintenance. From spring through to summer, you can enjoy fresh annuals in various colours and styles.

The warmer months bring out the vivid shades in plants like pansies and snapdragons, while the cooler months bring out African daisies, lilies and zinnias, adding a bit of character to your garden as winter approaches. You can also take advantage of the autumn season to enjoy perennials for several weeks.

For home gardens, annuals are a wonderful option. They will always be in bloom, and they aren't so picky about soil conditions.

What are seasonal plants?

You may be aware that some trees lose their leaves in the autumn and then re-grow them in the spring, but this is only one seasonal development cycle in plants.

Seasonal growth patterns can be influenced by various circumstances, including temperature, amount of water, and duration of sunshine. Plants manage their development processes depending on these variables. Seasonal growth cycles are determined by where plants grow, how they reproduce, and the function they play in their habitats.

Their cycles may be:

  • Annual: The plants grow for only one season and require replanting for the next season.
  • Biennial: The entire lifestyle of these plants occurs within two years. During the first year the plant will focus on growing their roots deep down into the ground and producing a small rosette of leaves above the surface. It is only during their second year that the plant stem elongates and flowers and seeds start to grow.
  • Perennials: Most commonly trees and scrubs, perennials will not die every year or two but die back seasonally and produce new growth the following spring.

What season do plants grow?

The growing season is from spring to autumn. The summer, when the sun is up and out for the longest, plants are in their most active growth phase.

Our qualified and highly trained horticulturists can help you get the best out of your garden, no matter what you are growing.

A little preparation and know-how will really help your plant life thrive. See us in store to learn more about when to plant your seasonal and annual plants and flowers.

What season do you plant bulbs in Melbourne?

Bulbs can add wonderful shapes, textures and colour to your garden and provide a dazzling wow factor when they bloom. Simply plant your bulbs by the end of April to avoid any hot spring weather that could damage your display.

And if you're just starting out, why not try some easy to grow bulbs such as freesias, ixias and sparaxis? Suitable for pots or garden beds, these easy and popular bulbs suit many different applications and garden design styles.
