Frequently asked questions

Do indoor plants need pots with holes?

Although a few varieties of plants can survive without drainage holes, most indoor plants need holes to allow for adequate drainage. If water accumulates in the pot, it can lead to root rot and the death of the plant. Pots without drainage holes can also be difficult to water properly since you need to make sure the entire pot is wet and not just the soil. This can be a challenge if you're using a pot with a small opening or if you have a large plant that takes up a lot of space.

Fortunately, there are plenty of pots with drainage holes available at All Green, so you don't have to worry about your plants not getting the drainage they need. We have a large selection of decorative pots in various sizes, perfect for any indoor plant. We also have a variety of planters, perfect for plants that need a little more water drainage. So if you're looking for pots with drainage holes, look no further than All Green! We have everything you need to keep your plants healthy and happy.

What is the best potting mix for indoor plants?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best potting mix for indoor plants will vary depending on the type of plant. However, most potting mixes designed for indoor plants will contain a blend of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, which help to retain moisture while also allowing air to circulate. You can also add some compost to your potting mix to provide your plants with extra nutrients.

For accurate advice on what your indoor plants need, contact us or drop by our Hoppers Crossing nursery today. We would be more than happy to help you choose the best potting mix and plants for your home, and while you're there, you just might find some inspiration for your next gardening project!

What is the best pot for indoor plants?

The best pot for your indoor plant will complement your interior design choices while also helping your plant thrive. The best pot will also provide:

  • Adequate drainage - excess water should be able to escape the pot, either through drainage holes in the bottom or a layer of gravel at the base
  • Protection from direct sunlight - plants need plenty of light, but too much can scorch their leaves and damage them
  • A stable environment - indoor pots for plants should not be moved around a lot or exposed to extreme temperatures (either too hot or cold) as this can also damage plants.

All Green Nursery & Garden has a wide range of indoor pots for plants to suit all your needs. Come and visit us today, we're sure to have the perfect pot for your indoor plant.

What size pot for indoor plants?

The ideal pot size for your indoor plant will depend on three key factors:

  1. Plant size
  2. Plant variety
  3. Amount of sunlight it receives

Generally speaking, you want a pot that is large enough to allow your plant to grow comfortably but not so large that it becomes difficult to move. Decorative pots can be a great way to add extra style to your indoor plants, and there are plenty of large indoor pots to choose from at All Green Nursery & Garden.

Drop by our Hoppers Crossing nursery in Melbourne's west today. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you find the perfect size pot for your indoor plant selection and provide you with everything they need to thrive.

How to plant an indoor plant in a pot?

When preparing to plant an indoor plant into its new pot, there are a few steps to take to ensure successful transplantation and years of happy and healthy growth:

  • Water-proofing. Some indoor pots will need to be treated with a waterproofing agent before use, as the porous clay material can easily absorb moisture and cause the roots of your plant to rot or the material itself to break down, destroying your pot. Follow the instructions on the waterproofing product carefully to avoid any damage.
  • Location. Be sure to place your pot in an area with ample sunlight. Most plants need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, but check the specific needs of your chosen plant before selecting a spot.
  • Potting soil. The right potting soil is key for healthy plant growth. Use a quality potting mix that will allow for good drainage, keeping the roots moist without becoming waterlogged.
  • Planting. Gently remove your plant from its old pot, taking care not to damage the root ball. If the potting soil is tightly packed and difficult to remove, use a trowel or sharp knife to loosen it before planting. Place the plant in the new pot and fill in around the roots with potting soil, using your fingers to pack it down lightly.
  • Watering. Newly planted indoor plants need to be watered frequently, especially during their first few weeks in their new home. Check the soil moisture daily and water when needed, giving the plant enough water to moisten the entire soil ball but not so much that the potting soil becomes waterlogged.
  • Fertilising. A little bit of fertiliser goes a long way for indoor plants. Use a water soluble fertiliser at half the recommended strength every other week to help your plant grow big and strong.
