Locally grown hedging plants

All Green Nursery & Garden is your local supplier of locally grown plants. We propagate and grow our hedging plants and screening trees in a dedicated facility outside of Melbourne, ensuring that your new screens are fully prepared for local conditions. These are some of the best tall and low screening plants in Australia.

We select species and varieties of hedging and screening plants that perform well in Melbourne's temperamental weather and diverse soil composition. Your hedging plants will be frost, heat, and drought-resistant, and will require little maintenance. If you need any tips, tricks, advice, or supplies to aid the planting and maintenance of your hedges, visit us at Hoppers Crossing, or call our customer service team.

Hedging plant delivery

Hedges are great for screening, but not so good for transportation. Rather than having a giant shrubbery clouding the view of your hatchback or sedan, why not sit back, relax, and let it come to you? Our garden hedge delivery service can have any number of new plants delivered to your home or job site, ready to be planted.

We have no minimum orders, so whether you require one gap-filling hedge or an expansive barrier of screening trees to line your property, we have you covered. We calculate our shipping costs based on your proximity to our locations, so visit our delivery page for more. If you'd like to place an order, give our friendly customer service team a call today.

How do I care for my hedges?

Once planted, your hedges will likely grow exponentially over the coming months. Watering, feeding, and pruning are essential actions that you must take to get the strongest growth.

Here are some key tips to follow:

  • Prune your young hedge when it reaches full size. This promotes strong new growth all over the plant.
  • When your hedge is looking unruly in the warmer months, prune 5 to 10 centimetres off and reshape to your desire.
  • Reintroduce whatever is pruned off into the soil below your hedge. Decomposition of plant material will aid growth.
  • Fertilise your hedging plants according to instructions in mid-spring and late summer.
  • Manage pests and diseases in your hedges as they arise, to ensure that the whole plant isn't affected.

For more tips and tricks on caring for hedges and screening trees, visit All Green at Hoppers Crossing, southwest of Melbourne. Our horticulturists will be glad to give you all the advice you need.

How do I begin planting hedging?

The hard part about hedge planting is selecting exactly what you want to go where. After you have completed this vital step, you can get started with these:

  1. Plan spacing and dig holes. The closer the plants are together, the faster the hedge will fill out.
  2. Add compost to the hole and insert the plant until the whole hedgerow has been formed.
  3. Fertilise and water your plants in accordance with the instructions for each species and variety.

Depending on which species you have selected, you could be enjoying your new, fully grown hedge in just a few months.

What are some good hedging plants and screening trees for my Melbourne garden?

At All Green Nursery & Garden, we are always happy to offer our expert advice on what to plant in your yard. Whether it's for privacy, or to create an aesthetic backdrop for colourful flowering plants, there are literally hundreds of hedging options to choose from. Here are some of our favourites that we have covered in detail in a previous article.

  • Lilly Pilly Goodbye Neighbour (Acmena smithii) is an excellent privacy plant that grows rapidly with colourful flowers.
  • Lilly Pilly Backyard Bliss (Syzgium paniculata) is a dense, fast-growing hedge that works well around the edge of a pool area or garden.
  • Mock Orange (Murraya paniculata) boasts delightful white flowers and enjoys sun and moist soils year-round.
  • Sacred Bamboo (Nandina domestica) is not a true bamboo, but tolerates harsh conditions and exhibits an array of colours throughout the seasons.

If you're having trouble deciding what to plant in your yard, get in touch with the team at All Green. Our expert horticulturists and landscapers can offer you plenty of suggestions on screening and hedging that will enhance the look and improve the privacy of your Melbourne dwelling.

When is the best time to plant a hedge?

Most people will answer this question with 'now'. But this is not essentially true.

Autumn is a great time of year to plant hedges. The ground is still relatively warm from summer, and planting earlier in the calendar year gives plants time to settle in before the inevitable heat of summer in December. This is especially true for evergreen hedges.

Deciduous hedges can usually be planted year-round.

What are the fastest growing hedge plants?

When planting hedges in Australian gardens, speed is often the way to go. Here are some of our favourite fast growing hedges:

  1. Lilly Pilly. Native hedges like the Weeping Lilly Pilly provide thick, colourful coverage, fast.
  2. Photinia robusta. This large-scale hedge grows very fast and is tolerant to frost and drought,
  3. Pittosporum Silver Sheen. This silvery plant offers robust foliage - an ideal screen plant for privacy.
  4. Mexican Blooming Orange. Native to Central America, this fast bloomer offers attractive white flowers.

What we have in stock depends on season and availability. Get in touch with All Green to learn more about fast growing hedge plants.
