Native trees, grown locally

At All Green Nursery & Garden, we know the benefit of having local products. That's why we propagate and grow our native trees in a dedicated native tree nursery in Melbourne. All of our species are selected and grown to thrive in local soil.

Growing conditions and soil can vary widely from region to region. Native plants from our nurseries in Melbourne are exceptionally hardy and equipt to handle the dry heat of summer and the damp, chilly winter. If you have any questions about our Australian native trees and how they can best prosper in your yard, give us a call. Our customer service team will be happy to help.

Frequently asked questions

I don't know which Australian plant to choose — can you help me?

Yes! Our friendly native plant nursery team has had extensive experience helping our Melbourne clients select plants for their landscaping or home project. You can reach us by filling out a contact form. Alternately, approach one of our helpful team members when visiting one of our stores. We have plenty of staff on hand to help with all manner of enquiries!

Australian natives can be delicate — do you protect them when you deliver them?

We ensure they are protected every step of the way, from the moment the plants leave our nursery to when they arrive at your doorstep or worksite. The delivery costs depend on how far away you are from our two store locations in Hoppers Crossing and Epping.

Can you deliver native Australian grasses?

Absolutely! Our Australian native plant nursery delivery service is second to none, and we can service any address in the Melbourne metropolitan region. It has never been easier to buy Australian native grasses online. In some cases, depending on availability and when you call, we can even organise same-day delivery. Plus, with no minimum or maximum order, there's no job too big or small for our delivery team.

And we don't just deliver native grasses. We can deliver just about anything you need for a gardening or landscaping task, from plants and tools to rocks and sand.

Do you sell native plants wholesale?

Yes! If you become a wholesale partner, you'll get instant access to our huge range of both native and international plants and trees — at great prices, too. To find out more about our wholesale nursery products, make an enquiry.

Why are local plants native to Australia the best to grow in my garden?

When you choose a native plant local to your area in Victoria, you can trust that it's acclimatised to the climate. Australian native plants are hardier and more resistant to root rot and sun damage.

At All Green, we get our Australian native plant nursery supplies from locals in Melbourne and the surrounding area. This way, we can ensure you're getting the best products for your environment, at a healthy price, too.

Do I have to prepare the soil before I plant an Australian native?

You don't need to do any soil preparation for Aussie natives local to your area. If you wanted your plant to be as healthy as possible, you could get rid of weeds, loosen the soil, and add a small amount of native-friendly organic fertiliser.

When should I plant my local native?

This largely depends on the type of plant you have chosen. Autumn is usually the best time to plant any new additions to your garden, as it gives your plant the most time to establish its roots before the harsh Australian summers arrive.

Thanks to our milder seasons in Melbourne, you can get away with planting as late as spring.

Do you need to cut native grasses?

Cutting back ornamental grasses can really help them to thrive. The best time of year to trim and prune the grasses will vary depending on the species you're working with. Some grasses only need to be pruned back slightly, while others benefit from more intense trimming.

Our team know all about maintaining and looking after our different varieties of native grasses. You can speak to our friendly team in one of our stores or contact us online for more information.

How do you keep native grasses under control?

Native grasses are well acclimatised to Australian conditions. In fact, sometimes they can get a little too acclimatised! With a little care and attention, you can stop your native grasses from taking over your garden. You can dig out sections of roots, dig up clumps of native grass, and use a shovel to cut through the crown. Then trim unwanted sections with sheers like any other plant in the garden.

Which are the best native shrubs to plant in my garden?

We love all native shrubs! But we also have our favourites. We love these plants because they're beautifully easy to grow and maintain.

  • Grevillea flamingo: A fast growing shrub with dark green foliage. It blooms with large pink flowers throughout the whole year, attracting wildlife and increasing the biodiversity of your garden.
  • Callistemon Bottlebrush: This is one of the most emblematic Australian native shrubs. It's easy to maintain and rewards you with bottlebrush-shaped flowers during spring and summer.
  • Ivory curl: Flowering in autumn with long creamy flower heads, a beautiful low maintenance feature plant.
  • Lilac hibiscus: Also known as native hibiscus, this shrub showcases stunning mauve purple flowers. It adapts to all soils and thrives in open, sunny positions.
  • Waratah: This spring-flowering Aussie native is beautiful; it's the New South Wales floral emblem. Long serrated, dark-green leaves support their large red flowers. This shrub has minimal problems with pests, and well-draining soils will help protect them from diseases.
  • Woolly bush: Featuring silver-coloured foliage and red flowers once it matures, the woolly bush shrub makes a wonderful feature plant in any garden. It has a compact growing habit, making it great for screening and shade.
  • Thyme Honey Myrtle: This low maintenance plant tolerates frost and drought and rewards the gardener with purple flowers throughout the year. Its spicy perfume and sweet nectar attracts wildlife such as insects and birds.
  • Flinders Ranges wattle: A medium to large shrub, the Flinders Ranges wattle features long, narrow leaves which can droop down like a weeping willow when allowed to grow long enough. They showcase pale yellow flowers in spring. The flowers are so beautiful that many tourists visit the region to see them every year.
  • Silky Eremophila: This native shrub features silvery foliage and purple tubular flowers in spring and summer. While it traditionally grows better in drier areas, it has been propagated to acclimatise to Melbourne's weather and soil conditions.

How do I take care of my native shrubs?

Some native shrubs are easy to take care of, and others require a little extra love and attention. However, regardless of the species, there are some general rules to follow to get the best out of your plants.

Planting: After you've planted your native shrubs, you'll need to water them well in the following weeks while they establish roots.

Feeding: If you want to give your plants to grow into healthy, mature shrubs, you can apply a little fertiliser to give them a boost. To find out which product is best for your shrub species, ask the team at All Green.

Mulching: Covering the base of roots during colder seasons can help protect your native shrub from ground frost.

Pruning: Prune your plants just after they've finished flowering for the season. This way, the bush will keep its shape, and nutrients from soil and water will go to the plant parts that need it most.
