1. Set your soil. It needs to be nutrient-rich and well-draining.
2. Consider layering. Before you plant, you need to remember that tropical plants grow close together for protection.
3. Start with a shield. Hardier, wind-tolerant palms will protect delicate tropical plants below.
4. Retain heat. Stone walls and bricks are excellent insulators against the cold and wind.
5. Select for style. Once your microclimate is functioning, you can plant an array of lush green foliage punctuated by vibrant flowers.

With a bit of care and attention, many exotic plants will thrive in Melbourne's unique soil content and climate. At All Green, we stock many popular varieties of tropical plants. Here are some of our favourites:

• Cycad: These fascinating, prehistoric plants are accustomed to dry, arid climates, meaning that they use water sparingly. If you're looking to create a hardy, but environmentally-sustainable garden, cycads are a great starting point.
• Frangipani: These stunning tropical plants originally hail from the Caribbean and Central America, but are right at home in Australian gardens. Create an iconic tropical experience with a range of colours, from whites and yellows, to vibrant pinks and oranges.
• Bougainvillea: Native to eastern South America, these stunning climbers favour partial sun, but will recover nicely from frost in winter. Create a gorgeous, bright garden with a range of beautiful tropical colours including yellows, pinks, and oranges.

Tropical plants prefer soil that is high in organic matter - exactly like they would be treated to in the rainforest. Many tropical plants will grow in normal garden soil in Australia. 

But to get it right the first time, it's best to introduce your tropical plants into a soil environment that is loose, fertile, and slightly acidic. Tropical soil should also be loosely packed to allow the free flow of air and water.

Some tropical plants love full sun, and some don't. Tall tropical plants and trees that grow towards the sky are usually pretty keen on getting sunlight. Other tropical plants that grow closer to the ground are usually more in favour of shade and dappled sun.

If you are growing a tropical garden, be sure to compose it with this in mind. Plant your taller plants at the back so that they get plenty of sun. Beneath this canopy, you can plant the more sun intolerant plants.

Yes! Australian native plants and exotic plants sit alongside each other beautifully. The maintenance requirements of plants are determined by the species, not the country of origin.

You'll need to take into consideration several factors, such as:

1. Aesthetics: Does the position of your tree enhance the visual aspect of your landscape? 
2. Biological requirements: Will the tree tolerate the geographical conditions of your preferred placement?
3. Functional issues: Will the placement of the tree allow for you to prune it effectively?
4. Underground pipes: Will the root system impact any infrastructure or plumbing?

Trees don't usually need much maintenance once you've planted them — especially not compared to other plants. But there are some things you can do from time to time to ensure they thrive.

Once you've planted your tree, you'll need to make sure it's watered every day for up to two weeks. And if you add mulch around the base of the tree, it will help it stay moist and prevent weeds from growing.

Once they are planted, trees generally require less maintenance than other plants in your garden. They will require very little in the way of protection from the elements. However, they can still benefit from a bit of maintenance every now and again. If you trim damaged branches every few months, this will help your tree direct nourishment to the healthy branches.

At All Green, we stock a wide variety of exotic shrubs. But, if you want beautiful and low maintenance plants, there are our favourites:

• Acalypha: There are over 400 species of this genus, ranging from ground cover plants to larger shrubs. It is known for its coloured foliage which ranges from yellows and greens to reddish purple, copper, and dark green.
• Allamanda: With large trumpet-shaped flowers and trailing woody canes, this shrub is often mistaken for a climbing plant. It needs full sun, and well drained soil.
• Azalea: Well-known for their vibrant flowers, azalea shrubs love acidic soil. They're not the easiest plant to maintain, but it rewards you with vibrant flowers and a sweet perfume.
• Gardenia: This evergreen shrub blossoms with creamy white flowers in the warmer months. It grows best in partial shade, and slightly acidic soil.
• Geranium: Also known as pelargonium or storksbill, this shrub needs well drained soil, and six to eight hours of sunlight. It's an easy plant to maintain — it needs a good watering once a week, and the occasional fertilising.
• Hibiscus: Available in a wide variety of colours, hibiscus shrubs bloom almost all season — as long as they have access to sun. They're easy to grow, and require minimal maintenance.
• Crepe myrtle: This deciduous shrub blooms with ruffled flowers in white, pink, mauve, lavender and red during summer. For best results, it should be placed in full sun, and needs regular watering.
• New Zealand Christmas bush: A hardy shrub with dark green leaves and small, bright red flowers, this plant attracts bees and butterflies — increasing the biodiversity of any garden. Plant in full sun or partial shade, and water once a week.‍
• Oleander: Oleander shrubs are one of the most versatile plants. They tolerate acidic soil, drought, and hot weather. They're very easy to take care of — just take care to not water them too much.

This really depends on what kind of exotic shrub you have in your garden. In general, we recommend the following:

1. Starting the process when the shrub is dormant (usually in autumn or winter)
2. Cutting away dead and diseased branches first
3. Removing bits of the plant which block your view, or impede footpaths/driveways
4. Cut away branches which overlap one another
