Spring onions are sun-lovers, thriving with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. If you’re growing them outdoors, pick a spot that gets full sun to help them grow strong and healthy. For indoor gardening, a bright, sunny windowsill is perfect. If natural light is limited, a grow light can keep them happy and productive.
Spring onions like their soil to stay moist but never soggy. A light watering every 3–4 days usually does the trick, but always check the top inch of soil—if it feels dry, it’s time for a drink. Avoid overwatering, as sitting in waterlogged soil can lead to bulb rot and unhappy plants.
Absolutely! Spring onions are a great choice for indoor gardening. They grow well in pots with good drainage and don’t take up much space. Just make sure they get plenty of sunlight from a window or a grow light. With a little care, you can have fresh spring onions at your fingertips year-round.
To keep your spring onions thriving, feed them every 2–3 weeks with a liquid fertiliser that’s balanced or slightly higher in nitrogen. This supports strong green growth and nutrient-rich bulbs. Start feeding once the plants are established, and they’ll reward you with a lush, vibrant harvest.
You can harvest spring onions in two ways. For a full plant harvest, pull them up when the stems are around 20 cm tall. If you’d prefer a continuous supply, simply snip the green leaves as needed, leaving the bulbs in the ground to regrow. This way, you’ll enjoy fresh onions for weeks!
