Adding mulch on top of quality soil and compost is a winning formula for improving and protecting your garden. It’s the finishing layer that helps everything underneath come together, holding in moisture and regulating soil temperature through Melbourne’s changing seasons.
Choose finer grades like pine or pine bark for everyday planting, or opt for water saver mulch in drier conditions. If you're after a more textured look, red or black-dyed mulches can add a bit of contrast and definition to landscaped areas. In more practical spaces, options like soft fall and recycled mulch are ideal for play areas and high-traffic zones.

Our mulch range is sourced from pine bark, timber by-products, and recycled organic materials, processed right here at our Hoppers Crossing nursery and South Werribee plant propagation site. This includes screening, grading, and colouring selected mulches to ensure a consistent finish. We also produce our soil and compost on site, so everything works together as a complete system designed specifically for Melbourne conditions.

Mulch goes a long way, so getting the right amount makes all the difference. Whether you're refreshing a few garden beds or covering a larger area, we supply quantities to suit your project. Bagged mulch is ideal for smaller jobs and easy top-ups, while bulk supply is a more cost-efficient option for larger spaces and full garden refreshes.

The amount of mulch you need depends on the size of your area and how deep you plan to lay it. As a general guide, mulch is typically spread at a depth of 50–75mm:
For example, a 20m² garden bed will usually require around 1–1.5m³ of mulch.
It’s always better to allow a little extra, especially if you’re working with uneven ground or topping up existing mulch. If you’re unsure, bring in your measurements, and we can help you calculate the right amount for your space.
Start by clearing any weeds, debris, and old or compacted mulch. If needed, lightly turn over the soil or top up with compost before applying your new layer.
Spread mulch evenly across the surface at a depth of 50–75mm, keeping it slightly clear of tree trunks or plant stems. This helps prevent moisture build-up in the area.
Once applied, give it just a little bit of water to help settle the mulch in place. Over time, you can top it up as it naturally breaks down.
The right mulch depends on how you’re using the space and the look you’re after.
If you’re unsure which option is best for your project, our team can advise you based on your space, plants, and conditions.
Bark is a specific type of mulch, usually made from pine bark that has been graded into different sizes.
Mulch is a broader term that includes bark, as well as other materials like recycled timber, green waste, and dyed products. These can vary in texture, appearance, and how quickly they break down.
Bark mulch tends to last longer and gives a more textured, natural finish, while finer mulches break down faster and are better suited to improving garden beds over time.
Mulch naturally breaks down over time, which is part of what makes it beneficial for your garden.
As it decomposes, the mulch adds organic matter back into the soil, but this also means it gradually reduces in depth. Most garden beds will benefit from a top-up once or twice a year, depending on the type of mulch and how exposed the area is.
Finer mulches tend to break down more quickly, while bark and decorative mulches generally last longer.
Mulch can significantly reduce weed growth by blocking sunlight and forming a protective layer over the soil.
While it won’t completely eliminate weeds, applying mulch at the correct depth makes it much harder for weeds to establish and easier to remove any that do appear.
For best results, apply mulch over a cleared and prepared surface to create a more effective barrier.
